Medical Students Sitting In A Row

RHOP | Rural Health Opportunities Program

The Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP) is a cooperative program between Peru State and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Students admitted into the RHOP program must be from a rural background. The purpose of the program is to recruit and educate students from rural communities who plan to return to rural areas to practice. It represents a commitment and dedication to quality health care for the citizens of the state. Upon selection into the RHOP program, students who meet all the program requirements will be admitted into their specific program at the UNMC. Students are strongly encouraged and expected to practice in the rural areas of Nebraska.

Eligibility

  • Be a rural Nebraska resident (students from the following cities and towns are not considered rural and therefore not eligible to apply to RHOP: Omaha, Ralston, Boys Town, Elkhorn, Lincoln, Bellevue, Papillion, La Vista, Chalco, and Offutt Air Force Base).
  • Be committed to practice in a rural Nebraska area.
  • Demonstrate strong academic potential (ACT score expectations vary by program but scores must be at least a 19 or above in all four areas to receive consideration).
  • Apply for only one professional field.
  • Be enrolled at Peru State College for the entirety of their discipline guidelines.

Benefits

If selected as a participant in the program each student will:

  • Receive a full tuition waiver while enrolled at Peru State, provided the student maintains good standing within the RHOP program standards.
  • Be given acceptance to the UNMC after their completion of Peru State's pre-professional curriculum.
  • Follow a special curriculum at Peru State that will prepare the student for studies at UNMC.

    Final Selection

RHOP Positions: Review each option's page to see available seats and alternate seats.

Alternate Positions: Applicants will be selected as alternates. Only alternates will be allowed to fill any vacancies. All applicants will be notified of their status as soon as possible. Nebraska applicants for the RHOP should also consider applying for the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees Scholarship at Peru State College. The scholarship provides full tuition for up to four years at PSC for Nebraska residents and, if awarded, can assist students who are not selected as an RHOP recipient with a scholarship equal to that of the RHOP scholarship. The deadline for the Board of Trustees Scholarship is January 15 annually. Click here for information about the Board of Trustees Scholarship.

Abby Friesel

The RHOP program at Peru State College greatly helped me successfully plan for my graduate experience at UNMC. I am in my third year of pharmacy school at UNMC and am preparing for clinical rotations in my fourth year. The RHOP program has helped me to excel in my academic testing and clinical skills while at UNMC. While at Peru State College, the RHOP program enabled me to build relationships with professors, stay on track, excel in classes, and guarantee acceptance into UNMC. The moderate class sizes were great for one-on-one interaction with professors, which allowed for a better learning environment.
